The Quiet Witness begins with the family heirloom tiger painting that has been part of my family since at least 1969. The tiger is transformed into a spare monochrome ink-wash drawing on warm, aged paper. Broad dry-brush marks, broken lines, diluted grey passages, and areas that nearly dissolve into the paper replace the saturated color of the original. The familiar pose and melancholy expression remain intact, but the reduction to ink and empty space gives the tiger a quieter, more contemplative presence.
