Beneath the Indigo Bamboo
Robert Meyers-Lussier · Digital Art - Digital Japanese Color Woodblock From Family Heirloom Painting
Beneath the Indigo Bamboo begins with the family heirloom tiger painting that has been part of my family since at least 1969. The tiger is transformed into a Japanese color woodblock print set within a dense stand of bamboo. Warm ochre and orange define the animal against deep indigo-blue leaves, muted green bamboo stalks, and softly weathered cream paper. Flat areas of color, strong contour lines, simplified vegetation, subtle registration texture, and the appearance of carved and printed marks replace the painterly surface of the original. The familiar seated posture and uncertain expression remain intact while the tiger enters an entirely new visual tradition.
